Holi is a gazetted Holiday in India. All government and private offices as well are closed on this day.

Legend Behind Celebration of Holi
The story behind the celebration of Holi is related to a king who’s name was Hiranakashipu.
He had a son, Prahlad, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu.
Hiranakashipu had banned worshiping God in his kingdom.
But his young innocent son, was so deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu that he couldn’t stop himself to worshiping lord Vishnu. Hiranakashipu gave orders to kill his son Prehlad.
Holika, sister of Hiranakashipu sat in fire with Prahlad.
She had a boon that fire wouldn’t kill her.
But that boon didn’t work. She was burnt in that fire and Prahlad was safe.
Since then Holi festival is being celebrated and Holika Dahan takes place in memory of that incident.
